Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *weḷ-ney. Cognate with Kannada ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ (beṇṇe), Tamil வெண்ணெய் (veṇṇey) and Telugu వెన్న (venna). Equivalent to വെൺ (veṇ, “white”) + നെയ് (neyŭ, “fat, oil, ghee”).
