Ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *cām-. Cognate with Kui (India) ସେମ୍ବି (sembi), Kuvi ତାମ୍ବେଲି (tambeli), Kannada ಆಮೆ (āme), Tamil ஆமை (āmai), Telugu తాబేలు (tābēlu) and Malayalam ആമ (āma).
