From Proto-Dravidian *tan-tay (“father”) or Proto-Dravidian *tan-ṯi (“father”). Cognate with Irula தந்தெ (tante), Kui (India) [script needed] (tanji), Malayalam തന്ത (tanta), Tamil தந்தை (tantai), Telugu తండ్రి (taṇḍri), Duruwa तेंद (tend).
