From Proto-Dravidian *tan-tay (father) or Proto-Dravidian *tan-ṯi (father). Cognate with Kannada ತಂದೆ (tande), Kui (India) [script needed] (tanji), Malayalam തന്ത (tanta), Tamil தந்தை (tantai), Telugu తండ్రి (taṇḍri), Duruwa तेंद (tend).
