Etymology
Derived from Proto-Dravidian *wariñci (“rice”), doublet of அரி (ari), Cognate with Telugu వరి (vari), Tulu ಅರಿ (ari) and Malayalam അരി (ari). Compare Sanskrit व्रीहि (vrīhi) and Ancient Greek ὄρυζα (óruza), speculated to be a borrowing from Proto-Dravidian.[1]
