Inherited from Prakrit 𑀫𑀸𑀉𑀲𑀺 (māusi), from Late Prakrit *𑀫𑀸𑀢𑀼𑀲𑁆𑀲𑀺 (*mātussi), from Early Prakrit *𑀫𑀸𑀢𑀼𑀲𑁆𑀲𑀲𑁆𑀲𑀺 (*mātussassi), from Sanskrit मातुःष्वसृ (mātuḥṣvasṛ), a compound of मातुः (mā́tuḥ, “mother's”, genitive of मातृ (mātṛ)) + स्वसृ (svásṛ, “sister”).[1] Cognate with Bengali মাসি (maśi), Hindustani موسی / मौसी (mausī).
