Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀁𑀕𑀼𑀝𑁆𑀞 (aṃguṭṭha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit अङ्गुष्ठ (aṅguṣṭha), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hangúštʰas (thumb, big toe), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eng- (joint). Doublet of અંગુશ્ત (aṅguśt). Cognate with Hindustani अंगूठा / انگوٹھا (aṅgūṭhā), Marathi अंगठा (aṅgṭhā), Punjabi ਅੰਗੂਠਾ (aṅgūṭhā), and Rajasthani अंगुठौ (aṅguṭhau).
