Borrowed from Classical Persian اخبار (axbār), from Arabic أَخْبَار (ʔaḵbār), plural of خَبَر (ḵabar, “report, news”). The Arabic singular has been borrowed as ਖਬਰ (khabar). Compare Hindi अख़बार (axbār).
