From Early Assamese ৰাজা (raja), from Sanskrit राजन् (rājan), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hrā́ȷ́s, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rḗǵs (“ruler, king”). Doublet of ৰাণা (rana).
