Inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑀯𑀸𑀬 (savāya), from Sanskrit सपाद (sapāda, increased by a quarter), a compound of स- (sa-, collective or additive prefix) + पाद (pāda, quarter). Cognate with Odia ସଉଆ (sôua), Hindi सवा (savā), Gujarati સ​વા (sa​vā), Kashmiri سۄاد (sọād).
