Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀫𑀸𑀲 (māsa), from Sanskrit मास (mā́sa), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mā́Hasas, from Proto-Indo-European *méh₁n̥sos, genitive of *mḗh₁n̥s (“moon; month”) (as the month was defined as the orbital period of the moon). Doublet of মাহ (maho), মেহজাবিন (mehjabin), and মাহতাব (mahtab).
