From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer mās ~ mas (gold). Several further etymologies have been proposed:

  • from Sanskrit माष (māṣa, a kind of bean; a particular weight of gold).
  • from Proto-Mon-Khmer *jmaas, a prefixed form of *jaas (to shine). Cognate with Old Mon yimās (shining (gold)) and yās (dawn; to shine). Compare also Malay mas, emas.
