Borrowed from Classical Persian نوکر (nawkar, “servant”), from Turkic with semantic shift, from Mongolic, ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *nökör (“friend”). Compare Hindustani نَوکَر (naukar) / नौकर (naukar), Gujarati નોકર (nokar), Punjabi ਨੌਕਰ (naukar) / نوکَر (nokar), Marathi नोकर (nokar), Kannada ನೌಕರ (naukara).
