Borrowed from Classical Persian نوکر (nawkar), from a Turkic source, ultimately from Proto-Mongolic *nökör (“friend”). Compare Punjabi ਨੌਕਰ (naukar) / نوکَر (nokar), Gujarati નોકર (nokar), Marathi नोकर (nokar), Bengali নওকর (noōkor), Kannada ನೌಕರ (naukara).
