Borrowed from Classical Persian گنج (ganj, “store, treasury”), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (gnc /ganǰ/, “treasure”), from Old Iranian, perhaps specifically from Old Median *ganǰam. Cognate with Hindustani گنج / गंज (gañj).
