From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śubʰrás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćubʰrás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱubʰ-rós, from *ḱewbʰ- (beautiful, clean). Cognate with Old Armenian սուրբ (surb, pure, holy).
