From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwā́ti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wḗh₁ti. Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌 (iti), Ancient Greek ἄημι (áēmi, I blow), Proto-Slavic *vě̀ti (to blow), German wehen (to blow), Old English wāwan (to blow).
