Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *mā́tiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mā́tiš, from Proto-Indo-European *méh₁-ti-s, from *meh₁- (“to measure”). Cognate with Ancient Greek μῆτις (mêtis), Proto-Germanic *mēþiz (whence Old English mǣþ), Proto-Albanian *māti (whence Albanian mot).
