Inherited from Old Marathi माकोडा (mākoḍā), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟 (makkaḍa), from Sanskrit मर्कट (markaṭa). Cognate with Konkani मांकड (māṁkḍa) and Konkani मांकोड (māṁkoḍa).
