Etymology

Oldest attestation in the Vedic Sanskrit compound मष्मषाकृ (maṣmaṣā́kṛ-, to crush, literally to do 'mash-mash'). It is an onomatopoeic word with parallels in many languages, eg English smash, German Matsch (muck), Finnish mäiskis (splash), Arabic مص (maṣṣa, sip).[1]
