Etymology
Oldest attestation in the Vedic Sanskrit compound मष्मषाकृ (maṣmaṣā́kṛ-, “to crush”, literally “to do 'mash-mash'”). It is an onomatopoeic word with parallels in many languages, eg English smash, German Matsch (“muck”), Finnish mäiskis (“splash”), Arabic مص (maṣṣa, “sip”).[1]
