From Proto-Indo-Iranian *máryas (“young man”), from Proto-Indo-European *mer- (“young man or woman”).
Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬌𐬭𐬌𐬌𐬀 (mairiia, “yeoman”) and Latin marītus (“husband”), Ancient Greek μεῖρᾰξ (meîrax, “lass, young lady”), Welsh morwyn (“maiden”).
