Etymology
From an unattested *मक्षि (mákṣi, “fly”) (which is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mákšiH, and is, by surface analysis, मक्ष् (makṣ) + -ई (-ī)) + -क (-ka). Compare Sanskrit मशक (maśaka, “gnat, mosqito, fly”).
