Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀩𑀼𑀪𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀸 (bubhukkhā), from Sanskrit बुभुक्षा (bubhukṣā). Cognate with Punjabi ਭੁੱਖ (bhukkha) / بُھکّھ (bhukkh), Gujarati ભૂખ (bhūkh), Marathi भूक (bhūk), Bengali ভুখ (bhukh), Assamese ভোক (bhük). Doublet of बुभुक्षा (bubhukṣā).
