पोथा

Hindi

Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀬 (pŏtthaya, book) or 𑀧𑀼𑀢𑁆𑀣𑀬 (putthaya), from Sanskrit पवस्त (pavasta, covering) and Sanskrit पुस्तक (pustaka, book). The latter is a borrowing from some Middle Iranian language (see there). Both are ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pawástam (covering, envelope). Doublet of पुस्तक (pustak) and पोस्त (post).
