Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀮 (pattala, “thin”), from Sanskrit पत्त्रल (pattralá, “leafy”). Cognate with Gujarati પાતળું (pātaḷũ), Marathi पातळ (pātaḷ), Odia ପାତଳ (patôḷô), Bengali পাতলা (patola), Assamese পাতল (patol).
