From Proto-Indo-Iranian *nápāts (“grandson, descendant”), from Proto-Indo-European *népōts (“descendant, nephew”). Cognates include Avestan 𐬥𐬀𐬞𐬁𐬝 (napāt̰), Old Persian 𐎴𐎱𐎠 (n-p-a /napā/), Latin nepōs, Ancient Greek ἀνεψιός (anepsiós), Old English nefa (whence English neve).
