Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *tuHṣṇíHm, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tuHšníHm, from Proto-Indo-European *tuh₂s-n-, from *teh₂ws- (to be quiet, be still), itself perhaps from *tews- (to be happy).[1][2] Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬎𐬱𐬥𐬌̣𐬱𐬀𐬛- (tušnịšad-), Danish tyst (quiet),[3] Old Prussian tusnan (still), Luwian 𒌅𒄷𒅆𒀀𒄿 (tuḫušiya-, to await, to wait and see),[1] and Proto-Celtic *tausos (deaf).[2]
