Etymology
Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀘𑀺𑀢𑁆𑀢𑀕 (cittaga), from Sanskrit चित्रक (citraka, “leopard”), a compound of चित्र (citra, “variegated, spotted”) + काय (kāya, “body”), referring to the spots on the fur of a leopard. Cognate with Bengali চিতা (cita), Gujarati ચિત્તો (citto), Marathi चित्ता (cittā).
