From Old Marathi 𑘐𑘹𑘩𑘹𑘽 (geleṃ), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀕𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀅 (gaïllaa), from 𑀕𑀅 (gaa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-illa-) + -𑀓- (-ka-),[1] from Sanskrit गत (gatá), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *gatás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gatás, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷm̥tós. Cognate with Gujarati ગયું (gayũ), Hindi गया (gayā), Punjabi ਗਿਆ (giā).
