Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Háydʰas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Háydʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éydʰ-os, from *h₂eydʰ- (“to ignite, fire”). Cognate with Ancient Greek αἶθος (aîthos).
