From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hŕ̥dʰak, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hárdʰakš ~ *Hr̥dʰakás, related to Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hárdʰas (“division, half”). See also अर्ध (ardha, “half”).
