Borrowed from Classical Persian آزاد (āzād), from Middle Persian ʾcʾt' (āzād, “noble; free”), from Old Persian *𐎠𐏀𐎠𐎫 (āzāta-), from Proto-Iranian *āzāta-. Compare Bengali আজাদ (ajad), Punjabi ਅਜ਼ਾਦ (azād).
