Inherited from Prakrit 𑀅𑀦𑁆𑀢𑀭 (antara), from Sanskrit अन्तर (antara), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hántaras, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hántaras, from a merger of two Proto-Indo-European adjectives with different initial laryngeals:

Compare Awadhi आँतरा (ā̃trā) (lakhimpuri dialect), Marathi आँतर (āĕntar), Bihari आँतर, आँतरा. Doublet of अंतर (antar) and अंदर (andar), a Persian borrowing.
