Usage notes
- In standard Persian, است (ast) and هست (hast) are strictly separate terms. With است (ast) being used for state of being ("is", "are") and هست (hast) being used for location or existence ("there is", "there are"). Spoken dialects, however, do not usually make this distinction. With the Kabuli dialect using است (ast) for both senses, and the Tehrani dialect using هست (hast).
Synonyms
- (there is): وجود دارد (vojud dârad)
- (is): است (ast) (only in Iranian Persian), میباشد (mi-bâšad)
Antonyms
- نیست (nist)
