Etymology
From Proto-Iranian *marka-, from Proto-Iranian *marč- (“to destroy, damage”), from a blend of Proto-Indo-European *mer- (“to die”) and Proto-Indo-European *melkʷ- (“to damage”).[1] Compare with Northern Kurdish merg, Pashto مرګ (marg), Ossetian марг (marg, “poison”), and Ancient Greek βλάπτω (bláptō, “to disable, harm”).[2]
