Inherited from Proto-Turkic *köpürüg (“bridge”); cognate with Azerbaijani körpü, Bashkir күпер (küper), Chuvash кӗпер (kĕp̬er), Kazakh көпір (köpır), Kyrgyz көпүрө (köpürö), Tatar күпер (küper), Turkmen köpri, Uyghur كۆۋرۈك (köwrük) and Uzbek koʻprik.
