From Ottoman Turkish قوندوز (kunduz), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kunduŕ; cognates with Turkish kunduz, Azerbaijani qunduz, Kazakh құндыз (qūndyz), Bashkir ҡондоҙ (qondoź), Chuvash хӑнтӑр (hănt̬ăr), Southern Altai кумдус (kumdus).
