Etymology
From Proto-Turkic *xātun (“queen, lady”); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰴𐱃𐰆𐰣 (qatun, “queen”), Azerbaijani qadın, Kazakh қатын (qatyn), Kyrgyz катын (katın), Karakhanid قاتُونْ (qātūn, “noble woman”), Uyghur خوتۇن (xotun), Uzbek xotin and Yakut хотун (qotun). Doublet of خاتون (hatun).
