Etymology
From the root ع ل ب (ʕ-l-b).
Compared by Paul Haupt to Akkadian 𒀀𒆷𒈪𒌅 (a-la-mi-tu /alamittu, elamittu, alabattu/, “a kind of palm-tree”), as عُلْبَة (ʕulba), عَلَبَة (ʕalaba), collective عُلَب (ʕulab), is also recorded as the name of a tall palm-tree, from which the box would have been made; comparing also the vessel name Ancient Greek ἀλάβαστος (alábastos), ἀλάβαστρος (alábastros).
