Etymology

From the form I verb شَهِدَ (šahida, to witness, to bear witness), from the root ش ه د (š-h-d). Semantic evolution from "witness" to "martyr" is probably calqued from Ancient Greek μάρτυς (mártus).

Cognate with Hebrew שָׂהֵד (sahéd).
