Inherited from Old Gujarati सोनउं (sonaüṃ), from Gurjar Apabhramsa सोण्णउं, from Prakrit 𑀲𑁄𑀅𑀡𑁆𑀡 (soaṇṇa), 𑀲𑁄𑀯𑀡𑁆𑀡 (sovaṇṇa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit सौवर्ण (sauvarṇa), vṛddhi derivative of सुवर्ण (suvárṇa).
