From Middle Persian stwl (/stōr/, “horse, mount; large cattle”), from Avestan 𐬯𐬙𐬀𐬊𐬭𐬀 (staora, “large cattle”), from Proto-Iranian *stáwrah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stáwras (“large domestic animal, cattle”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)táwros (“wild bull, aurochs”). Probably related to obsolete تاول (tâvel, “bull, ox”).
