سامور

Arabic

Etymology

From Aramaic שָׁמִירָא (šāmīrā) / ܫܡܝܪܐ (šāmīrā, emery, adamant), having the usual KāLūM measure of Aramaisms, as **سَامِير (**sāmīr) would be much more unfamiliar a form, while س (s) instead of ش (š) mimicks as usual the correspondence of words inheriting Proto-Semitic .
Itself the Aramaic is deemed to be from Hebrew שָׁמִיר (šāmī́r, emery, corundum, adamant), which is possibly related to Akkadian 𒉌𒌓𒌑 (NA₄U2 /šammu/, emery, corundum, adamant), as well as to Egyptian jsmr, smr (emery), Ancient Greek σμύρις (smúris, emery), Old Armenian զմռնիտեան քար (zmṙnitean kʿar, emery), Semitic borrowings.
