Etymology
Contraction of خدا حافظت باشد (xudā hāfizat bāšad, “may God be your protector”) from Classical Persian. Gradually shortened to خداحافظت (xudāhāfizat) or (xodâhâfezet), to خداحافظ (xudāhāfiz) or (xodâhâfez), and colloquially to خدافظ (xudāfiz) or (xodâfez)
