From Classical Persian حوالی (havālī, “vicinity, outskirts”), from Arabic حَوَالَيْ (ḥawālay, “around”), probably due to the suburban setting, or alternatively from Arabic حَوَالِي (ḥawālī, “private space”), referring to the nature or function, popularized in Mughal India.
