إبط
Arabic
Etymology
No cognates are known. Maybe irregularly from ع ب ط (ʕ-b-ṭ) or even غ ب ط (ḡ-b-ṭ) or بَطَّ (baṭṭa), but probably ه ب ط (h-b-ṭ) with the armpit understood as the part of the arm where “declivity” or “emaciation” has its place and the regular sound change of the initial consonant known from grammatical elements إِن (ʔin), أَن (ʔan), أَ (ʔa), form IV etc. but also found in e.g. إِبِل (ʔibil) and أُهْبَة (ʔuhba).
