Etymology 2
From Sogdian ʾʾwzyy (*ōwazē) (Manichean), ʾʾwzʾk (*āwaze, *āwāz), possibly from Akkadian 𒍪𒀊 (apsu), Sumerian 𒍪𒀊 (abzu). Possibly related to Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾpzn' /ābzan/), Old Armenian աւազ (awaz, “sand”), and Arabic حَوْض (ḥawḍ).
