From Middle Hindi آن٘کھ (ā̃kh) / اَن٘کھ (aṅkh), inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀺 (akkhi), from Sanskrit अक्षि (akṣi), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷ- (eye; to see). Compare Punjabi اَکّھ (akkh).
