From Middle High German rizen, from Old High German rīzan (“to scratch”), from a merger of two similar verbs, Proto-Germanic *wrītaną (from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“to cut, scratch, tear, sketch an outline”)), and Proto-Germanic *hrītaną (“to scratch, carve; to rip; to tear, pull”). Compare German reißen.
