From Middle High German zifer (“digit”), from Old French cifre, from Latin cifra, ultimately from Arabic صِفْر‎ (ṣifr). Compare German Ziffer, as well as Polish cyfra and Russian ци́фра (cífra) for use as a feminine noun. Doublet of שיפֿער‎ (shifer).
