From Middle High German zifer (“digit”), from Old French cifre, from Latin cifra, ultimately from Arabic صِفْر (ṣifr). Compare German Ziffer, as well as Polish cyfra and Russian ци́фра (cífra) for use as a feminine noun. Doublet of שיפֿער (shifer).
